What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a protocol used to query information about the registration of domain names and IP addresses. It provides access to public data about who has registered a particular domain.

What information does a WHOIS lookup contain?

A WHOIS query shows various types of information about a domain name, depending on the domain extension and privacy settings of the owner:

  • Domain status: Whether the domain is active, blocked or available for registration
  • Registrar information: The company where the domain is registered
  • Important dates: When the domain was created, last updated and when it expires
  • Nameservers: The DNS servers that manage the domain
  • Contact details: Information about the owner (if not protected by privacy protection)

Privacy and WHOIS

Since the introduction of GDPR in 2018, many personal details in WHOIS records have been protected. Registrars often offer WHOIS Privacy Protection, where personal contact details are replaced by those of the registrar or a privacy service.

Different domain extensions

The amount of available WHOIS information can vary by domain extension (TLD). Some country code extensions like .nl show less data than generic extensions like .com or .org. Each registry has its own policy for sharing registration data.

💡 Did you know?

The WHOIS protocol has existed since 1982 and was originally intended to help system administrators contact each other about technical problems. Today it is used worldwide for querying domain registration information.
