Adding an email address to Thunderbird

Thunderbird is our favourite email client, so you have made a good choice!
Thunderbird is open source and privacy-friendly, unlike programs such as Windows Mail and Outlook.

In this article we explain how to add your mailbox to Thunderbird.

Step 1: Open Thunderbird, click the gear icon at the bottom left, then click 'Account Actions'.
An extra menu then opens, where you click 'Add Mail Account...'

Step 2: Fill in the following fields on this screen:
Your full name: This is the display name of the mailbox. When you send an email, the recipient sees this name as the sender in their inbox.
Email address: This is the email address you created in the DirectAdmin control panel
Password: You set this password when you created the mailbox. Forgotten the password? Click here to see how to change it.

Then click 'Continue'.
In almost all cases you will now see a green message saying 'Configuration found at email provider'. In that case you can click 'Done' and you are all set.
Don't see this message, or do you see a different one? Then click 'Configure manually'

Step 3: If Thunderbird did not manage to find the correct settings on the server, we enter them manually here.
Fill in all fields, even if they are marked as optional.

Incoming server:
Protocol: IMAP
Hostname:
This is your domain name, so in this example testnaam2.nl. Sometimes your domain name is filled in here with IMAP or SMTP in front of it; you can remove that, the domain name alone is enough.
Port: 993
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication method: Normal password
Username: This is the email address that you also enter in the other fields. This must always be filled in.

Outgoing server:
Hostname:
This is your domain name, so in this example testnaam2.nl. Sometimes your domain name is filled in here with IMAP or SMTP in front of it; you can remove that, the domain name alone is enough.
Port: 587
Connection security:
STARTTLS
Authentication method:
Normal password
Username:
This is the email address that you also enter in the other fields. This must always be filled in.

Please note:
do you only have an Email Only package with us and is your website hosted by another provider? Then entering the domain name as the hostname will not work. Instead, enter the server name of your Email Only package, which you can find in the email you received when you purchased the package. The server name looks like this, for example: linux2410.webawere.nl.

Once all fields are filled in, click 'Re-test'. Can you see that the connection was successful? Then click 'Done'.

Done! Your mailbox is now active in Thunderbird
