*Performance problems
At some point your website may run into performance problems, in other words slowness. You may notice this yourself, but in exceptional cases we may also have been forced to take your website offline. We do this to protect the server and to prevent the whole server, rather than just your site, from becoming slow or worse (for example unreachable).
The cause can vary widely. Usually, however, the problem lies with MySQL, although cron jobs are also frequent culprits. For example, a cron job/task that starts every minute and takes longer than a minute to run. So before it has finished, the next one has already started. At some point this will demand so much memory and CPU that an entire server can go down, including all the other sites on that server.
Can you solve it?
We spot problems when they occur, but we usually cannot solve them for you. We purely provide the hosting account in which you can run scripts/sites. We can give tips on many things, but solving problems like these is usually something you have to do yourself or outsource. Website optimisation and tuning are often time-consuming, and you will understand that we cannot do this for the price you pay for a hosting package.
Standard scripts are no guarantee of good performance
If you use standard scripts such as Joomla, WordPress, etc., that certainly does not mean you can serve 'many' users with them without optimisation. It depends heavily on which components and plugins you use, and certainly also on how stable the version in question is. When we monitor a standard Joomla version, we see many performance problems on the database side. As long as the number of users stays limited, our servers can handle that perfectly well, but as soon as it grows substantially, this can really cause problems.
If you use plugins, it is a good idea to switch them all off as a test and then look at the site again. If it is fast now, the cause is definitely a plugin, and it is a matter of switching them back on one by one until you find the cause.
It used to run fine and now suddenly it does not
There can be several reasons why something suddenly no longer runs properly. Over time, the amount of data in the MySQL database grows. Database queries that are poorly written therefore have an increasingly hard time. To find 1 record, at first it may only have had to read 10, and over time 1000 or many more. If the number of visitors increases at the same time, this can quickly cause problems. First the site will be slow, and at some point it may suddenly be too much for the server. A database query can just cross a threshold and send a new query before the old one has finished. If that continues, a MySQL server can become so slow that it 'hangs'.
Another reason something no longer works properly is, for example, an update or a plugin that has been installed.
So is the server not to blame for my site being slow?
Yes and no. If your site were the only site on the server, it would probably take quite a bit longer before you ran into problems like these. However, this is shared hosting. So there are other sites running on the same server that all want their share of the same server. Suppose your site has ended up on a new server with only a few other sites on it at that moment: the server then effectively compensates for the shortcomings of your site, and as more sites are added to the server, you will notice it more. After all, the server has to share its resources among more sites. At some point no more sites will be added and things will stay fairly constant, although the principle still applies that the longer a site runs, the more data there is.
But a script from your Installatron is slow
The scripts you can install from Installatron are not our scripts. We only offer an easy way to install them. We can and are happy to answer many questions about them, but modifying the scripts or the related databases is a step too far. The problem then lies in the script itself and has to be solved by the developers of the script.
Suppose, for example, you install Joomla or osCommerce and within a short time you get many thousands of visitors a day: that may well cause problems. Scripts like these work nicely, but as soon as serious numbers of visitors arrive, real fine-tuning is needed and shared hosting will no longer really be suitable. With dedicated hosting you can, for example, configure the MySQL server optimally for 1 website; with shared hosting it is configured for an average site.
Can my site move to business hosting (BUS-WEB)?
Usually that is not the solution. In no time, the same problems arise there. After all, the problem lies in the site itself, not in the server. More hardware is therefore a sticking plaster, not a cure. The business packages (which run on separate servers) offer a better guarantee of stable performance. With the normal hosting packages, performance is also good, but it can vary somewhat per server depending on the sites.
