Who is EURid and who registers .EU names?

Registrar

weboke.nl is an official EURid registrar and can register domain names directly with EURid in an automated way, without any third parties involved.

Who is EURid

EURid is a consortium of the organisations behind .be, .se and .it. EURid is short for European Registry of Internet Domain Names. On behalf of the European Commission, EURid manages all .EU domain names.

History

EURid is the not-for-profit organisation appointed by the European Commission to manage the .eu top-level domain. The first initiative to establish .eu as a European top-level domain (TLD) was taken by the European Council in 1999. EURid was then appointed as the manager of the .eu registry in May 2003. The actual service contract was signed in October 2004.

In March 2005 the .eu domain was added to the root zone of the internet Domain Name System. This means that, technically speaking, .eu has existed since that moment.

EURid was founded in April 2003 by the three organisations that manage the national registries of Belgium, Italy and Sweden. Later, the organisations that manage the TLDs of the Czech Republic and Slovenia also became members. The European chapter of the Internet Society (ISOC) joined EURid in 2006, followed by the organisation BusinessEurope in 2007.

Between 7 December 2005 and 6 April 2006, the .eu registry started accepting applications for domain names on a limited scale. During that period, a domain name could only be applied for by persons and organisations that enjoyed some form of legal protection for a name within a member state of the European Union. This period of phased registration is also known as the Sunrise period.

On 7 April 2006 EURid opened the .eu TLD for general registration, strictly applying the principle of “first come, first served”.

Why .EU

  • The .eu domain is available to 490 million Europeans in 27 countries.
  • A .eu address is less anonymous than a generic domain.
  • With a .eu address you show that you are open to cross-border business in Europe.
