What is an IP address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique number that identifies each device on the internet. It's comparable to a postal address for your computer, phone or other network device, allowing data to know exactly where to go.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4: The traditional format (e.g. 192.168.1.1) consists of 4 groups of numbers from 0-255. With approximately 4.3 billion possible addresses, IPv4 is slowly being exhausted.
IPv6: The new standard (e.g. 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) offers virtually unlimited addresses and better security features for the future of the internet.
What does an IP address reveal?
- Geographic location: Usually accurate to city level
- Internet Service Provider: Which provider delivers your internet connection
- Organization: For business connections often the company name
- Connection type: Mobile, cable, fiber optic or satellite
- Proxy/VPN usage: Whether the IP address might be masked
Privacy & Security
Your IP address is public information and is shared with every website visit. While it can reveal your general location, it doesn't provide access to personal data such as your exact address or identity.
For extra privacy, you can use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or proxy server to mask your real IP address.
Useful IP address tools
Besides this IP lookup tool, there are other useful utilities such as ping tests for checking connectivity, traceroute for tracking network paths, and port scanners for security checks. These tools help diagnose network problems and optimize your internet connection.
Your website or email with a Dutch provider
With Dutch web hosting from WebOké your site runs on servers in the Netherlands, with free SSL and daily backups. Only need email? Then email hosting on your own domain may suit you better.
Frequently asked questions about IP addresses
Everything you want to know about IP addresses, privacy and internet security
A public IP address is unique on the internet and is assigned by your internet provider. This address is visible to the websites and services you visit. A private IP address is used within your local network (such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) and cannot be reached directly from the internet. Your router translates between the two using NAT (Network Address Translation).
Windows: Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig. Look for "IPv4 Address" for your local IP, or use our tool for your public IP.
Mac: Go to System Settings > Network, or use Terminal with ifconfig.
Linux: Open Terminal and use ip addr show or hostname -I.
Mobile: Go to your WiFi settings for your local IP. For your public IP, the easiest way is to use our tool in your browser.
No, someone cannot hack you directly with just your IP address. They can, however, roughly determine your location (usually down to city level), launch DDoS attacks or scan ports. For real security, a good firewall, strong passwords and up-to-date software matter far more than hiding your IP address.
Most internet providers use dynamic IP addresses that change periodically. This often happens when your router restarts or after a certain amount of time. Providers do this to manage their pool of IP addresses efficiently. Businesses and some consumers can request a static IP address that does not change, but this usually costs extra.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (such as 192.168.1.1) and offers about 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses (such as 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334) and offers a practically unlimited number of addresses. IPv6 was developed because we are almost out of IPv4 addresses, but adoption is slow because both systems can coexist.
There are several ways to mask your IP address:
- VPN (Virtual Private Network): Encrypts all your internet traffic and routes it through another server. We offer NordVPN, one of the best VPN services, with servers in 60+ countries
- Proxy server: Sends your requests through an intermediary, but does not always encrypt them
- Tor Browser: Uses multiple layers of encryption for maximum anonymity
- Public WiFi: Uses the IP of the network, but is less secure
For the best combination of speed, security and ease of use, we recommend NordVPN. WebOké customers often get attractive discounts!
IP whitelisting is a security measure in which only specific IP addresses are given access to certain services. It is often used for:
- Access to company servers or databases
- Website control panels (such as DirectAdmin or cPanel)
- APIs with sensitive data
- Remote desktop connections
Please note: if you have a dynamic IP address, you need to update the whitelist regularly!
Yes, your internet provider can in principle see all your internet traffic, including which websites you visit. However, they cannot see the content of encrypted connections (HTTPS). To better protect your privacy, you can:
- Use a VPN to encrypt your traffic: try NordVPN via WebOké
- Enable DNS over HTTPS in your browser
- Use alternative DNS servers such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1)
With NordVPN, you encrypt all your internet traffic and hide your online activity from your provider. You also get access to geo-blocked content!
Yes, using a VPN is completely legal in the Netherlands! A VPN is especially useful for:
- Privacy protection: Hide your online activity from your provider and hackers
- Safe browsing: Essential on public WiFi networks
- Streaming: Access Netflix, Disney+ and other services from abroad
- Working from home: Secure connection to company networks
- Online banking: Extra security for sensitive transactions
We offer NordVPN, the world's #1 VPN service, with:
- 5500+ servers in 60 countries
- Military-grade encryption
- No-logs policy
- 30-day money-back guarantee
