I have registered my domain elsewhere for 5 years, can I bring it with me?

We advise against registering a domain name for a long period. In the case of a .nl name, for example, it cannot be registered and paid for more than one year in advance. This means that the provider with whom you do this for a long period receives the money in one go and has to pay for the domain name from it every year. That is a risk: if they can no longer pay, or if you want to transfer, you lose that money.

For .com and other names too, we advise you not to pay for more than a year at a time. Some can be registered and paid for a longer period, but here too, if you transfer, you lose the money and have to start paying again. This is because when we transfer a domain, it simply has to be paid for again.

We would only make an exception for .nu. You are best off registering it yourself (for a longer period) at nunames.nu and then pointing the nameservers to the provider you have at that moment. A .nu name is practically impossible to transfer. The domain name then always stays in the same place, and you can take your hosting package wherever it is most convenient or cheapest for you at that moment.

If you have already registered the name for a longer period and still want to move to another hosting company, you can consider leaving the domain name with the old provider and choosing hosting only with the new provider (with us, of course ;-)).
